Sam Richardson Way

February 15, 2018, was a special day at Central Technical School, a day to celebrate Olympian Sam Richardson’s accomplishments and athletic legacy by officially naming the path in front of the school Sam Richardson Way. The ceremony was part of CTS’s Black History Month tributes with the Richardson family, other guests, and media in attendance.

Representing Canada at the British Empire School Boy Games in Australia, Sam Richardson won both a gold and a silver medal at the 1934 British Empire Games in London, England. Sam was part of the Canadian track and field team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, in Germany. Since Germany was under Nazi rule, his participation as an African Canadian was both controversial and courageous. It was at the 1936 Olympics that Sam met and was mentored by African American athlete Jesse Owens, and they became lifelong friends. Sam competed against Owens in the first leg of the 4x100m

The CTS alumni association is raising funds for a heritage Toronto plaque in honour of Sam, to be installed in front of Central Technical School and plans for a commemorative scholarship in his memory to be awarded the same year as the plaque dedication. Please click HERE for details.
